That’s more than 10 million kilograms of plastic prevented from polluting our waterways. If we were to line up all of those bottles end-to-end, we could circumnavigate the Earth twice. If we stacked them vertically, they would go a quarter of the way to the moon!

Plastic Bank is a global bottle-deposit program that tackles both plastic pollution and poverty. Through this program, collectors around the world gather discarded plastic and exchange it for income and essential benefits that support their families. The recovered plastic is then transformed into plastic feedstock for new, recycled products, promoting circularity.

This initiative not only supports environmental sustainability, but also uplifts coastal communities. Thousands of collectors have gained access to healthcare, groceries, education, and many other benefits and services. Through our partnership with Plastic Bank, we are advancing our commitment to sustainability and plastic waste reduction while living out one of CooperCompanies’ core values: “Do the right thing.”

We are honored to partner with Plastic Bank to make a meaningful impact in nearly five hundred coastal communities in countries like Indonesia and beyond.
This incredible achievement was made possible by the dedication of Plastic Bank and our Sustainability team. Together, we’re supporting a greener planet for all.

Paul Riggs: Advancing CooperVision’s Sustainability Journey https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/paul-riggs-advancing-coopervisions-sustainability-journey/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 17:34:33 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3881 When Paul Riggs’s daughter announced that she was studying biology at university, he was both proud and surprised, as he had never expected her to follow a career path so similar to his own.

Paul, whose educational journey and three-decade career have been steeped in the sciences, brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to his current role at CooperVision as our Director of Science and Sustainability. He guides his teams with a distinctive collaborative energy, which ensures everyone understands the potentially profound impact of their work. While his forward- thinking approach aims to yield lasting benefits for People + Planet, our initiative that aims to conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production, and empower people to make environmentally conscious choices, he is already seeing how sustainability changes are impacting future generations.

Advancing Sustainable Practices at CooperVision

Paul plays a crucial role in progressing our sustainability efforts across CooperVision and around the world, as he strives to find areas in which to minimize our possible environmental impact and support People + Planet. His objective is to act as a catalyst for progress, even if the individual steps are small, by harnessing the energy of his teams. He brings together diverse teams of innovators and challenges them to find ways to source, design, and recover to reduce our carbon footprint.*†‡1,2

“In my view, the medical device industry has often been historically complacent when it comes to sustainability efforts because the very nature of what they produce has such a positive impact on the end user,” he explains. “But this is no longer an excuse. Our products should help to improve the well-being of both people and planet. This is why it’s important to assemble a capable team—to harness their collective strengths. With everyone aligned to a common objective at CooperVision, collaboration becomes the cornerstone of achieving our goals.”

This means Paul engages with individuals involved in all parts of the contact lens production cycle process. Some days, you’ll find him collaborating with the Global Sourcing Team, analyzing materials procurement, manufacturing processes, and supply chains. Other days he will be engaged with suppliers to enhance the potential sustainability of our products and packaging, with a specific focus on minimizing our carbon impact and efficiently using resources.

a group of people cleaning the beach

At CooperVision, we’re offsetting waste from our products and packaging that cannot yet be reclaimed and making a measurable difference through net plastic neutrality.§1 Paul partnered with Carol Herring, CooperVision’s Global Packaging Material and Technology Manager, and her team to carefully calculate plastic usage throughout our product range. This project has since transformed into our net plastic neutrality initiative with Plastic Bank, which funds the collection and recycling of ocean-bound plastic equivalent to the weight of plastic used across a selected range of our products.|3 Plastic Bank collects, weighs, sorts, chips, and melts the gathered plastic waste into pellets, which are then sold as “raw material feedstock” to be repurposed into everything from bottles for cleaning products to clothing.4 To date, the effort has prevented the equivalent of more than 305 million plastic bottles from entering the oceans.¶5

Paul’s team has worked closely with Environmental, Health, and Safety with the aim of increasing the sustainability footprint of our operating and manufacturing sites. Seven of our manufacturing facilities have been recognized LEED® certifications or BREEAM® ratings.**6 The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system is a globally recognized symbol of excellence in green building7 and has been awarded to our contact lens manufacturing facilities in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, Alajuela, Costa Rica, and Scottsville, N.Y., as well as our distribution centers in West Henrietta, N.Y., and Spain. A secondary packaging and distribution facility in the U.K also holds a BREEAM® “Excellent” rating. BREEAM® (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a voluntary system that assesses a building’s performance on environmental issues.8

Shifting Mindsets for Meaningful Change

Paul’s diverse responsibilities converge to help propel CooperVision’s sustainability journey forward, beginning with actively challenging mindsets to recognize that prioritizing sustainability is not merely a choice but a fundamental responsibility.

Paul Riggs smiling

Paul emphasizes the importance of being mindful of decisions that will have an environmental impact. “Initiating sustainable behavior starts with shifting mindsets,” remarks Paul. “For example, when the U.K. government required certain retailers to start charging consumers a 5- pence charge for plastic shopping bags, it was initially seen as a measure to reduce plastic waste. However, over time, people internalized this concept, feeling a sense of guilt even considering paying the fee, despite its affordability. Altering people’s sustainability mindsets involves empowering them to recognize their capability to effect change for the greater health of the planet.

His recognition of the importance of shifting mindsets for meaningful change is a key factor in his success in driving our sustainability goals forward. He knows that we may not have complete answers to all our sustainability challenges right now, but he believes that something needs to happen now, and we can’t wait for perfection – and there is always room for improvement and enhancement.

“Ultimately, it’s about making choices that benefit the future of our planet and the well-being of generations to come. I shared earlier that my daughter is pursuing biology. She represents the future, the next generation that we’re striving to protect,” says Paul. “She’s interested in biodiversity and ecology and how to engineer the world for the future. When I share with her some of the initiatives that are part of CooperVision’s sustainability journey, she thinks we are doing the right things, which makes me believe that while the path might be tough, challenging, and demanding, tackling these difficulties is essential. Positive change often comes from confronting and overcoming challenges.”

CooperVision Achieves Prestigious LEED® Gold Certification at Two Facilities in the UK https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/coopervision-achieves-prestigious-leed-gold-certification-at-two-facilities-in-the-uk/ Thu, 23 May 2024 16:47:43 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3876 SOUTHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM, May 23, 2024—Global contact lens manufacturer, CooperVision, has achieved another milestone in its sustainability journey with two of its facilities in Hampshire, UK, being awarded the prestigious LEED® Gold certification. The company’s Mountpark packaging facility in Southampton and its Delta Park distribution facility near Fareham were recently assessed across a range of criteria to quantify their environmental credentials. These sites proudly join other CooperVision facilities in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Spain and the United States that are LEED certified.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a globally-recognised symbol of excellence in green building. Through design, construction and operations practices, LEED-certified buildings strive to help make the world more sustainable. LEED projects earn points by adhering to prerequisites and credits across nine measurements for building excellence; from integrative design to human health to material use. Both CooperVision sites excelled in a number of evaluation categories, including energy performance, transportation and water efficiency.

“We are always looking for ways to operate more sustainably to benefit our employees, customers, business and the planet” said Jason Burden, Vice President Global Packaging Operations at CooperVision. “The Mountpark facility already holds a BREEAM®* “Excellent” rating, which is a positive reflection of its sustainability credentials, and the award of LEED Gold certification at these two sites is a major testament to the dedication of our team, whose participation made this recognition possible.”

CooperVision has focused strongly on sustainability across its business. The company is committed to taking steps in its manufacturing and distribution to operate more sustainably where possible. This includes taking steps to reclaim its manufacturing materials after they have served their initial purpose. The company is also facilitating the responsible sourcing of materials,1 and starting to offset waste from its products and packaging that cannot yet be reused.2† To find out more on CooperVision’s approach to sustainability, visit: https://coopervision.co.uk/about-us/coopervision-sustainability.

CooperVision Puerto Rico Increases Resiliency Through Combined Heat and Power System https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/coopervision-puerto-rico-increases-resiliency-through-combined-heat-and-power-system/ Tue, 21 May 2024 00:54:39 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3764 CooperVision began constructing a natural gas-fueled Combined Heat and Power System (CHP) and company-controlled microgrid in 2020 at our manufacturing campus in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, following several years of hurricanes and other natural disasters that weakened the island’s power grid. In 2017, Hurricane María, the largest and most destructive hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in the past century, devastated the island’s infrastructure and left most people without electricity for months.

“We knew that the island hadn’t seen its last storm,” recalls Efrain Oliveras Villafane, Associate Infrastructure Director at the CooperVision Juana Diaz site. “Even before María paid us a visit, we had begun to prepare.”

Working with a cross-functional team of colleagues from Finance, Operations, and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Oliveras Villafane and his team identified a solution that would not only provide a reliable source of energy in the face of the next María but would also be sustainable and cost-effective. The system captures and reuses excess heat and avoids distribution losses, making it significantly more efficient than conventional generators. It also requires less fuel to produce the same amount of energy when compared to traditional generation of power.

The completed CHP began operations in 2022 with a capacity of 23.3 megawatts and 3,000 refrigeration tons. The system was built in alignment with leading construction codes, helping prepare it to withstand the impacts of potential earthquakes and hurricane-force winds. 2023 marked the first full calendar year that the site used the CHP for its power needs.

“The CHP system checked all of our boxes – it provides grid resiliency and the power and chilled water we need for our operations today and in the future, while also resulting in cost reductions and price stability,” said Damaris Santiago Lebron, director of EHS for CooperVision Americas Manufacturing Operations. “The team did more than safeguard the site; they provided a competitive advantage for CooperVision by helping us keep power on 24/7 and deliver a continuous supply of products to the market in a more sustainable way.”

CooperVision Extends Partnership with Plastic Bank, Adds Vision Care Program for Collectors https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/coopervision-extends-partnership-with-plastic-bank-adds-vision-care-program-for-collectors/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 22:57:31 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3179 Collaboration Expands Support for People + Planet

SAN RAMON, Calif., April 8, 2024—To make an even greater impact on People + Planet, CooperVision and Plastic Bank have renewed their net plastic neutrality partnership through 2026. With the extension, the partnership has expanded to include a vision care program to provide vision screenings and vouchers for complimentary eye exams and glasses for eligible Plastic Bank collection members in Indonesia, who are essential to CooperVision’s net plastic neutral partnership with Plastic Bank.1

In partnership with Plastic Bank, CooperVision funds the collection and recycling of ocean-bound plastic equivalent to the weight of plastic used across a range of its participating soft contact lenses, including the lens, blister and packaging components, that are sold and distributed across 27 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.*2 To date, the effort has prevented the equivalent of more than 305 million plastic bottles from entering the oceans, and through the extension,†2 CooperVision expects to more than double the total impact of its plastic neutrality initiative with Plastic Bank by the end of 2026.‡§3

“The first three years of our partnership with Plastic Bank have had a significant impact in not only helping clean coastal communities by recycling plastic waste, but also in improving the livelihoods and economic stability of collection members,” said Aldo Zucaro, Senior Director of Corporate Responsibility at CooperCompanies.24 “As a global leader in contact lenses, CooperVision is committed to helping improve the way people see each day because it improves quality of life. Our collaboration with Plastic Bank now enables us to provide vision correction for qualifying collection members who are making a difference by removing plastic from the environment and oceans, which truly embodies our passion for supporting people and planet.”

By the end of 2026, hundreds of collection members in Indonesia will be eligible to receive vision screenings through the new vision care program.1

“At Plastic Bank, we envision a wasteless world and are committed to empowering communities and local entrepreneurs to end poverty,” said David Katz, Founder of Plastic Bank. “Collection members have limited access to basic eye care, and for many, this will be the first time they have received vision screenings and necessary vision correction. We know that vision impairment can affect quality of life, independence, and mobility. Working with CooperVision is not only bringing significant social benefits to our communities, but it is also bringing our vision of ending poverty to life.”

CooperVision is continuously working to minimize environmental impact and operate more sustainably around the globe as part of broader efforts across CooperCompanies to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through the net plastic neutrality initiative, CooperVision and Plastic Bank have a shared commitment to protecting the planet, specifically by advancing life below water (SDGs 14 and 17) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).5 Research has shown that improved eye health reduces poverty and improves productivity and advances general health and well-being as well as educational outcomes (SDGs 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 11).6

The expanded partnership coincides with the relaunch of CooperVision’s sustainability platform, with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint, removing waste from our processes, and reframing our relationship with plastic, including considering ways to make plastic better. At the center of our sustainability platform is our commitment to design with intention and to embrace innovation as a means for caring for People + Planet. Our sustainability commitments include:

  • We design – and continuously redesign – to reduce our carbon footprint;¶** 7
  • We collaborate and innovate, embracing our ingenuity to care for our planet and for each other;
  • We’re taking steps to conserve limited natural resources†† 7 and are exploring ways to bring renewables into our manufacturing operations;‡‡§§ 7
  • By starting to offset waste from our products and packaging that cannot yet be reclaimed, we’re taking strides to improve the well-being of our planet;7 and
  • We work with partners to collect our manufacturing waste, recapturing resources and giving them new life when possible.||

“By simply prescribing and wearing CooperVision plastic-neutral contact lenses, eye care professionals and wearers are helping us in our commitment to sustainability—from our partnership with Plastic Bank, which focuses on improving communities through waste reclamation, to recovering and repurposing our own manufacturing waste, to sourcing responsibly,” said Zucaro.

CooperVision Launches Pioneering Multidisciplinary Program to Address Access Disparities for Children with Myopia https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/coopervision-launches-pioneering-multidisciplinary-program-to-address-access-disparities-for-children-with-myopia/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 21:06:30 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3155 CooperVision has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that will bridge myopia management access disparities among under-resourced children in the U.S. The global eye care leader is partnering with three of the nation’s top optometry schools to offer extended myopia treatment for a pilot group beginning in 2024. The program kicked off with inaugural activities in Boston and Chicago.

“All children deserve accessible, quality eye care to protect their future eye health. We are leading the conversation to identify long-term solutions to overcome access inequity for kids with myopia,” said Michele Andrews, OD, Vice President, Professional & Government Affairs, Americas, CooperVision. “Hand-in-hand with several academic partners who share our vision, this initiative represents a major advancement in addressing the childhood myopia epidemic.”

CooperVision will initially partner with optometry school faculty, residents, and students to identify and treat children in need, as well as engage other multidisciplinary community partners. The program structure is designed for scalability, potentially allowing more schools to participate over time.

In metropolitan Boston and central Massachusetts, the New England College of Optometry (NECO) and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) will elevate myopia management within their affiliated community health clinics. “This program will provide vital access to myopia management for children across the region who would otherwise be left out due to access and cost. This gift will ensure improved vision for learning and health outcomes in the years ahead,” said Howard Purcell, OD, President of NECO. “Forward-thinking, collaborative initiatives like this are critical to fight back against myopia’s pervasiveness, starting in our own neighborhoods,” said Greg Waldorf, OD, MPH, Associate Dean of Clinical Programs at MCPHS.

The Illinois College of Optometry (ICO), through its Illinois Eye Institute, will use the program to expand upon its rich history of care with Chicago Public Schools. “If we can collectively determine how to make myopia management accessible to more children, so many lives will be made better for decades—a heroic undertaking with immeasurable impact,” said Mark Colip, OD, President of ICO.

In its initial phase, the program is offering MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses and Paragon CRT® orthokeratology contact lenses at no cost for as long as participating children require myopia management. MiSight 1 day is the first and only soft contact lens approved by the FDA* to both correct vision and slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.1

Ongoing assessments will be conducted throughout the year to monitor the initiative’s performance and to support its continual improvement, facilitating the expansion of engagement aimed at long-term access solutions. CooperVision also plans to work with researchers from each school to aggregate and analyze relevant data supporting the program goals.

“Beyond the direct benefit to children and families who participate, this initiative presents optometry students—the next generation of clinicians who will be at the leading edge of addressing the myopia epidemic—the chance to provide essential care within their communities. For more than a decade, CooperVision has shared that effectively combatting myopia will be a long-term effort involving a wide range of contributors. Today, we are taking one more step in that direction,” said Dr. Andrews.

CooperSurgical® Partners with The Noble Paperie to Support Families Struggling with Infertility

One in eight U.S. families has trouble conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term.1 Research shows people diagnosed with and treated for infertility can experience a sense of loneliness, isolation, and shame.2 This line of cards by CooperSurgical and The Noble Paperie is intended to help friends and family lend support during the difficult moments in the infertility journey.

“For many, the path to pregnancy and parenthood can be challenging, and there are many moments in time that can be triggering,” said Kate Woolley, founder of The Noble Paperie. “My journey to motherhood was difficult, so I appreciate CooperSurgical’s efforts to not only focus on the science of infertility, but to raise awareness and empathy for the emotional impacts as well.”

Three cards are currently available and additional designs will roll out during the year. The cards available today offer support generally on the topic of infertility, as well as specific support for the upcoming Mother’s Day and Father’s Day holidays, which can be difficult for women and men struggling with fertility issues. Subsequent designs will lend support during other emotional times such as baby showers, Halloween and other life events.

“As a leader in fertility and women’s health, we often hear from patients and their physicians about the mental impact of infertility and the accompanying treatments,” stated Holly Sheffield, President, CooperSurgical. “We are excited about this partnership, as this is a unique way of showing up for the men and women who are going through fertility challenges and offers friends and family a way to show compassion and support for their loved ones.”

#NIAW2023: The Mental Health Impacts of Infertility are REAL https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/niaw2023-the-mental-health-impacts-of-infertility-are-real/ Sun, 23 Apr 2023 17:00:03 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3028 National Infertility Awareness Week takes place this year on April 23-29, 2023. The Mind and Body Wellbeing Employee Resource Group (ERG) recognizes the devastating impact infertility can have on mental wellbeing for those undergoing treatment and their loved ones.

A key aspect of our mission is to raise awareness, and in the case of fertility and infertility as the topics have been taboo for too long. For most of us, without even realizing it, the awkwardness around reluctance to discuss these subjects continues to foster a culture where people are afraid to open up to others. Fertility struggles are very common, and the impact on mental wellbeing is almost universal. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 8 families go through infertility. A survey conducted with clinicians reported that they claimed 90% of their patients struggling with fertility experience depression or some other kind of symptoms, and 42% report suicidal thoughts.1

Facing infertility struggles and treatments can interfere with many aspects of life including work, family, and relationships. The stress is real, no matter what someone’s infertility journey looks like.

Mental health issues range from grief and loss, struggling to open up and talk honestly about infertility, to full blown anxiety and mood disorders. The medications often used to treat infertility can also affect mood and may contribute to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and irritability. Families may feel isolated and stigmatized and find it very difficult to be around other families with children or manage questions from family and friends about when they will start a family.2

If you are going on a fertility journey, remember you are not alone. Talking openly about things that may be considered taboo can help to lighten and share the mental load and uncover a network of support for you to tap into. If someone you know is going on a fertility journey, offer words of support and provide a safe space to simply listen.

#NIAW2023: What Does LGBTQ+ Infertility Look Like? https://www.coopercos.com/news-articles/niaw2023-what-does-lgbtq-infertility-look-like/ Sun, 23 Apr 2023 16:45:17 +0000 https://www.coopercos.com/?post_type=news-articles&p=3025 News Articles 4We hear all the time about families struggling to conceive, but the term “circumstantial infertility” remains fairly new. So, what is circumstantial infertility? Circumstantial infertility refers to the family-building dreams of LGBTQ+ people and independent parents-to-be.

In both cases, biological family building will require assistance from a gamete donor.

What are some options for LGBTQ+ families?

  • Selecting a sperm donor: Those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community can select a donor from a sperm bank, such as CooperSurgical’s California Cryobank®. The process of donor sperm qualification at California Cryobank is extensive and sets a solid foundation for sperm donor selection built on a stringent, industry-leading screening process.
  • Selecting an egg donor:  There are many reasons why an individual or a family might choose to get help from an egg bank, such as CooperSurgical’s Donor Egg Bank USA, including: premature ovarian failure, low ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, history of genetic disease, same sex families, and more.
Donor Egg Bank USA’s network recruits a wide variety of egg donors who are motivated to help others realize their dream of having a family and works with contributing clinics to help ensure that the donor eggs meet quality standards.
